Biography

Georgios Mikirozis (*April 9, 1969) was surrounded by music from an early age, as his mother constantly listened to different styles of music at home. From the record collection of the 1950s and 1960s of various rock `n`roll, twist, mambo etc. to the catchy melodies of the hits of the 1979s on the radio, to the emotional depth of Greek folk music, especially the “Rebetiko” and the traditional music of Epirus (Northwest Greece) through his maternal grandfather, the clarinetist Konstantinos “Arvanitis” Anastasiou - these sounds shaped his early years and inspired him not only to listen, but also to sing and dance along.

In 1987, at age of 18, Georgios began to play bongó as a self-taught musician. The following yaer he discovered his love for the congas, his future main instrument. In the early 1990´s, this passion led him to study in Puerto Rico, where he received lessons in Afro-Antillean percussion from the renowned percussionists and teachers Luis Velez and Angel "Cachete" Maldonado. These experiences broadened his horizons and deedened his understanding of different rhythms.

His musical journey took him to Cuba, where he studied Afro-Cuban percussion with the luminary Tomás "Panga" Rámos. In 1995, Georgios founded the salsa orchestra "Afincando", which quickly gained popularity and gave him the opportunity to further develop his skills as a musician.

Since 2002 he has been part of the internationally renowned salsa and timba formation "Picason" as a conguero. His keen sense of sound aesthetics and his sensitive playing style have made him a sought-after musician. Over the course of his career, Georgios has worked with numerous national and international artists, including Eric Wainana, Ernesto Manuitt, James Morrison. Paolo Mendonza, Rolf Stahlhofen, Seven, Emel, Nubya, Nilsa, as well as Mark Hauser´s Tango Bolero Project and Cuadro Flamenco. His musical projects span a variety of styles such as rock, pop, jazz, latin jazz, brazillian jazz, big bands, fusion, house, drum n bass, flamenco as well as Greek, and orienal music.

For his outstanding musical work, Georgios was awarded in 2004 the Rheintaler Kulturpreis.

Since 2024 Georgios is presenting a solo concert program in which he combines "old" musical loves with newly discovered sounds to create unique sets and playing styles. His ability to combine and reinterpret different musical influences makes him an outstanding artist in today´s music scene.
